šŸ’§ Big Pharma exec leads MDMA legalization

PLUS, the extinction of ayahusca is imminent

Happy Monday! Thanks for Dropping In and checking out DoubleBlindā€™s newsletter, where weā€™re honored to deliver the freshest psychedelics news, culture, education, and happenings straight to your inbox.

We chose our featured story today because itā€™s a colossal piece of news: A Big Pharma executive is now steering the movement to legalize MDMA therapy. Yep, itā€™s all happening. Are we surprised? No. And to be honest, if the goal is to legalize access to MDMA ā€” a lab-made compound that creators Sasha and Ann Shulgin wanted to be a therapy drug ā€” someone with experience bringing a pharmaceutical to market should be the one doing that for Lykos Therapeutics.

Some of you might read that and think Iā€™ve sipped the electric sell-out Kool-Aid. But the truth is, psychedelic pharma is here. Itā€™s been here. And itā€™s happening whether we want it to or not. Even though I regularly lament about pharma (and for good reason), I will fully admit that ketamine lozenges (and integration!) have helped me deal with burnout in real time and given me a sense of spaciousness I thought died forever when I started my first day at UCLA in February of this year. The safety, consistency, and accessibility to this trippy, anesthetic tool wouldnā€™t be available without it being ushered through pharmaceutical avenues. As much as that makes me want to throw my computer out the window to admit, I canā€™t help but consider a similar upside to pharmaceutical MDMA for therapy. Am I still skeptical? Always and forever, lol. But giving credit where itā€™s due is ethical. So, here we are.

You can read all about this monumental shift of the psychedelic guard immediately below! If you keep scrolling, youā€™ll find a story about Stargazer mushrooms, how reform has increased interest in microdosing, and how psychedelic exceptionalism is harmful to people who take antidepressants. (Let them live in peace!)

Tap back in with us on Thursday ā€” we have more juicy news and culture stories cooking up to send your way.

Big Pharma Executive Is Now Leading the Movement to Legalize MDMA

Lykos Therapeutics' newest hire comes from Johnson & Johnson and helped bring ketamine nasal spray to market.

Following the FDA's denial of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, Rick Doblin stepped down from the board of Lykos Therapeutics, and a Johnson & Johnson executive was brought in to bring MDMA to market.

ā€œAfter 38 plus years of work, I'm profoundly saddened by the FDA decision around this critically needed therapy, but am heartened that Lykos will still move forward continuing clinical research that addresses the FDA's questions," Doblin stated. "I can speak more freely as a public advocate by resigning from the Lykos Board.ā€

In the psychedelic community, there's a growing concern over "psychedelic exceptionalism"ā€”the idea that psychedelics are inherently superior to traditional psychiatric medications like antidepressants or other non-psychedelic drugs like cocaine. This mindset can lead to shaming those who take SSRIs or other antidepressants, overlooking the fact that these medications play a crucial role in many people's mental health journeys.

Public interest in microdosing marijuana and psychedelics has been spiking amid the reform movement, with Google searches related to the dosing technique growing by 1,250 percent from 2015 to 2023, according to a new federally funded study published by the American Medical Association (AMA).

Shipibo leaders from the Amazon are sounding the alarm on the future of ayahuasca, as spiritual tourism and environmental exploitation threaten to push this sacred plant toward extinction. The over-harvesting of ayahuasca, combined with pharmaceutical interests and deforestation, is placing immense strain on the flora of the Amazon.
