💧MDMA for… dogs?!

PLUS, meet Stanley Mouse, Grateful Dead poster artist

Welcome back to The Drop In! As we wrap up the first week of August, it’s likely we all have one question on our minds: Will the FDA approve MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD? That decision is slated to arrive on August 11, although we’ve heard murmurs it may be delayed.

The FDA decision isn’t the only MDMA news moving through the digital ether. A neuroscientist from Colorado is curious about using MDMA as a treatment for…abused dogs? Yes, you read that correctly. As unhinged as that sounds, most of the recent drug legalization movements have also extended to pets. Cannabis has an entire political arm led by veterans advocating for treating animals with the plant. If you go to any pet store, you’ll see functional mushroom products (and hemp products) for dogs and cats. So, I’m not totally surprised to hear about MDMA for dogs.

It’s our featured story this week, so you can read more about it directly below! If you scroll past it, you will find a beautifully written profile on OG psychedelic artist Stanley Mouse, who created the Grateful Dead’s poster art in the ‘60s. You’ll also see stories on two of Gabon’s presidents consuming iboga, what to do if you’re having a “Blue Monday,” why mom’s are doing mushrooms, and so much more.

If you’re free on Sunday, join us for our workshop on solo tripping, hosted by the one and only, Mikaela de la Myco! You can learn more about it and sign up HERE.

We’ll check back in with you soon. Enjoy the weekend 🌞

A Colorado Neuroscientist Wants to Give MDMA to Dogs

A neuroscientist at the CU Denver Center for Psychedelic Research says he wants to study MDMA’s effects on abused dogs.

Last month, University of Colorado Denver launched the CU Denver Center for Psychedelic Research, which will study on the social, economic, and mental health applications of Colorado’s Proposition 122—a law that decriminalized the use of psilocybin-containing "magic mushrooms" and other plant and fungal psychedelics. In an interview with CPR News, center director Jim Grigsby, a neuroscientist, shared some of his upcoming plans.

His most attention-grabbing idea? Giving MDMA to abused dogs.

Stanley Mouse's poster art for the Grateful Dead captured the essence of the 1960s psychedelic rock era, becoming iconic symbols of that transformative time. At 83, Mouse continues to create in his Sebastopol studio, where his extensive and eclectic body of work reflects his deep influence on art and culture, marked by his innovative spirit and ongoing artistic evolution. We sat down with him for an interview.

Gabon is deeply rooted in the psychedelic tradition through Bwiti, a spiritual practice involving the use of iboga, a powerful psychedelic. Despite historical persecution, Bwiti has become one of the country's three officially recognized religions and continues to thrive, with many government officials and citizens actively participating in its rituals.

Many people describe ayahuasca as life-changing, helping them work through childhood wounds, take new directions, or be kinder to themselves and others. The wisdom gained from an ayahuasca journey can be applied to many aspects of life, both within and outside of medicine circles. Here are our favorite quotes about ayahuasca from those who have worked with it themselves, which can hopefully inspire your own life whether you’re familiar with the substance or not.

Contemporary artist Andrés Gudiño’s seductive masks and fluid bodies beckon us to challenge the boundaries of gender and sexuality

“Shape-shifting,” a term often used to describe mythical figures that inhabit the bodies of animals, is to change one’s form or identity at will. Rejecting medium-specificity, Costa Rican artist Andrés Gudiño works across drawing, collage, sculpture, and performance to craft creatures that fluidly shape-shift and don seductive masks—in the process queering human embodiment, gender, and sexuality.
