💧 The rise of 4-AcO-DMT

PLUS, Colombia's president admits to taking ayahuasca

Welcome back to The Drop-In! If you’re new here, this is DoubleBlind’s newsletter ~our latest project~ where we deliver the latest scoops, cultural odes, and industry tea written by some of the best journalists on the beat.

Today, we’re highlighting a piping-hot issue that our journalists have cumulatively spent a lot of time reporting on: 4-AcO-DMT. If you haven’t heard of it, this psychedelic compound is proliferating in the grey market and being marketed in products as “magic mushrooms.” Some sellers are even calling it “legal shrooms.”

If you ordered Issue No. 11 of DoubleBlind Magazine, you likely saw our deep dive into the mushroom market and why it seems like shroom products are available everywhere—gas stations, bodegas, smoke shops, dispensaries, etc. I’m not going to tell you what we discovered—we don’t do spoilers here! But I will say that we’ve solicited the investigative skills of the same talented journalist who penned our mag story—Webb Wright (who writes for many stellar publications, by the way, including Scientific American)—to write a separate story on the proliferation of 4-AcO-DMT. The story (linked below!) is another layer in the coverage we’ve quilted together on the mysterious compound and why it suddenly seems like it’s everywhere.

If you haven’t read Issue 11 yet, you can order it here. In the meantime, you can get a taste of the story by reading the equally interesting feature below. We recommend pairing the juiciness of these underground stories with a freshly rolled joint 😚💨

4-AcO-DMT Is the Most Mysterious and Widely Available Psychedelic on the Market

Legions of brands are lacing products with 4-AcO-DMT, otherwise known as “synthetic mushrooms,” and the drug’s rapid spread through the underground has some experts worried.

Legions of brands are now lacing products with 4-AcO-DMT, known as “synthetic mushrooms,” and the drug’s rapid spread has experts worried. In major North American cities, psychedelics-laced gummies, chocolates, and other products are popping up in local smoke shops and corner stores. These products often claim to contain psychoactive mushrooms like Amanita muscaria but are actually made with 4-AcO-DMT.

Journalist Webb Wright explores its spread through the psychedelic underground in our latest.

Our Latest

Many Amanita muscaria gummies are mislabeled, often containing other drugs instead. The lack of regulation and clarity in labeling has turned the market into a "wild west" scenario, jeopardizing consumer safety.

Most politicians prefer not to divulge the details of their drug use or psychedelic histories. Gustavo Petro, the president of Colombia, is not one of those political leaders, as he recently revealed that he’s twice taken ayahuasca.
