💧 The Most High: the secret psychoactive recipes of the old testament

PLUS, the designer drug the FDA couldn’t ban

Welcome back to The Drop In, DoubleBlind’s psychedelic newsletter serving up news, culture, and journalistic excellence about the underground straight to your inbox.

Did you have a good Solstice? Since our workshop on the 16th, where we explored the art of working with muscaria, we’ve been immersing ourselves in the rich lore of this stunning speckled mushroom. In fact, our featured story this week is about a psychoactive yellow Amanita. Have you heard of (or seen) it before? It’s surprisingly common in woodland areas. The question is: Should you consume it? Learn all about this bright mushroom — and its identification risks — below!

If you keep scrolling, you’ll find stories about psychoactive plants in the Bible, a designer drug known as “moxy,” and you’ll even find an opportunity to support a non-profit scholarship initiative dedicated to helping disadvantaged individuals access ayahuasca, ketamine treatments, and MDMA therapy.

Lastly, if you’re not doing anything on January 5, we’re hosting a workshop on the relationship between storytelling and catharsis. Come! You can find out more about it here.

Microdosing for Healing: EMPOWER

A 16-Week Immersion Program to Taper off Antidepressants & Prescription Drugs

Tapering off prescription medications is a powerful but often tricky step in self-empowerment and healing. It’s not just about your neurochemistry. It can be a very emotional process. Without the proper support, it can feel impossible.

Microdosing can be a powerful tool, but it only goes so far. Guidance and community can make all the difference. After helping hundreds through this process, Microdosing For Healing’s EMPOWER program is exclusively for individuals weaning off antidepressants and pharmaceuticals.

If you're looking for experienced microdosing guidance and education and a supportive community of peers in this critical process, join this first-of-its-kind program to kick off the new year in January 2025.

Yes, this Yellow Amanita is Psychoactive

But watch out—this mushroom's color makes it easier to mistake for deadly look-alikes.

With its iconic red cap and white spots, Amanita muscaria is one of the world’s most famous mushrooms. It belongs to the “fly agaric” family of fungi, which contain a completely different chemical kaleidoscope of compounds than psilocybin mushrooms. They act on entirely different areas of our nervous system.

However, like the cubensis family of magic mushrooms, there are many varieties with different colors. One of them happens to be yellow. Yes, it is psychoactive, but it comes with some important caveats you should know about.

If you’re out in the forest and spot a mushroom that looks like it might be fun to eat, please take the time to be absolutely sure. There are many poisonous look-alikes out there, and some are deadly. So before you decide to eat this sunny-looking mushroom, read this article.

Our Latest

Openly talking about psychedelics in mainstream media may be a recent development, but they’ve been subtly (or not-so-subtly) hinted at for decades in popular TV shows. Here are the most iconic scenes inspired by psychedelics.

On the Gulf Coast of Louisiana grows a rare, potent psychedelic mushroom. At first, it looks like any other cubensis, but there’s more to this lookalike than meets the eye. In this article, we take a closer look at the strange genetics of the Acadian Coast mushroom.

& More Must-Reads

  • Evidence of psychoactive plant use in the Old Testament gives new meaning to “The Most High.” Some of these mixtures of potent plant resins create powerful, complex biochemical cocktails unmatched in modern psychopharmacology. Read the full story here.

  • Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a popular therapeutic approach among underground psychedelic guides, but it can also introduce an idea few are prepared to handle skillfully: non-corporeal entities with dubious intentions. In IFS terminology, they are called “unattached burdens.” We know them as demons. Entities are common in the world of shamanic plant medicine, but how do they fit into the world of modern therapy? 💊 Moxy is a “designer drug” originally synthesized by Sasha Shulgin. It’s one of the few that is still legal to buy. The effect is somewhere in between MDMA and LSD and can be hard to describe. Here’s what you need to know about this curious compound

🍄 We’ve written a lot about how to grow your own mushrooms, but it’s also important to understand why this is a good idea. It’s not just about money or reducing risk. Here’s why you should grow your own mushrooms.

😴 Psychedelics generally have a contentious relationship with sleep, but mushrooms are oddly ambivalent. Sometimes, your sleep is better. Sometimes it’s worse. Why is that? We asked the experts what we know (and don’t) about shrooms and sleep.
